Writing

I have blogged about editing, grammar and usage, and linguistics at Arrant Pedantry for over fifteen years and have written about similar topics for Grammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips and Visual Thesaurus. I wrote a column called “Grammar on the Edge” for Copyediting newsletter from December 2012 to December 2018 and also wrote a few feature articles for the newsletter during that time.

Additionally, I have written grammar lessons for a series of seventh- to ninth-grade online English courses and have published a revised portion of my master’s thesis as “Practicing Prescriptivism: How Copy Editors Treat Prescriptive Rules,” in Language Prescription: Values, Ideologies and Identity, edited by Don Chapman and Jacob D. Rawlins (2020, Multilingual Matters).

Most of the archives of Copyediting are no longer available online, but a few of my pieces have been republished on the blog of ACES: The Society for Editing.
